Merkaba, the latest release by the Massachusetts based funk band, The Alan Evans Trio, is due out on March 19th of this year. CSMP was lucky enough to get our hands on a copy for a review prior to the release. The album kicks off with the opening track “Thor,” which includes a magical guitar solo from guitarist Danny Mayer. You can already hear the difference and improvements of the group since their last release Drop Hop.
When Drop Hop was released back in 2012, I thought to myself, can these guys possibly make better music together? Then I listened to Merkaba and within 3 minutes I was in a funk trance. The group as a whole has really hit their notch together. They are playing off each other with such raw emotion on this album. You can really tell how much they have connected as musicians over the last year. They’ve really tightened up.
“Gone,” the second track on the album, brings you into a time machine. You instantly feel like you are listening to the origins of funk music back in the 60’s and 70’s. It takes some serious talent to bring a listener on a journey like AE3 does with Merkaba. Another brilliant release from a very talented, good-hearted band, The Alan Evans Trio.
Another aspect that I love about this band, in addition to the soulful melodies Beau produces on his organ, and Al’s impeccable ability to drum up a beat that gets everyone in the room dancing, is Danny Mayer and his guitar. This guy can do anything with that guitar. Man is he good. Danny is one who can shred with the best of ‘em.
The tour kicks off tonight (February 28th) supporting Fishbone at StageOne in Fairfield, CT. The Alan Evans Trio features Alan Evans of Soulive on drums/vocals, Danny Mayer on guitar, and Beau Sasser on the organs. Merkaba is slated for release on March 19th via Royal Family Records who represent Soulive, Lettuce, Break Science and many others. CSMP would like to thank Danny, Al, and Beau for the music they create, and Amee of Lionchild Media for this opportunity.
